Guns

So, I have just finished having a debate about guns. Ala if they should be banned from the general public or not effectively.
So in my view they should. It's as simple as that for me.
I live in England. Guns have been "banned" for a fair while now. Yes if your a farmer you would have a license for a shotgun, and yes, there are circumstances, where if your CRb'd, have interviews with the chief of police, can prove that you keep the gun triple locked in a locked house, and can prove that you are a gun club member, you will be allowed a handgun, but basically they are banned.
I cant see this being anything but a positive.
I am 28 years of age. I live in what is a dump of a city basically. Druggies and even terrorists have lived here/live here. I have not once in my 28 years ever ever seen a handgun.
I have never seen anybody flashing a gun. Never heard a gun. Never seen a gun. Dont know anybody that owns a gun. Would have no clue where to get one.
I have also NEVER heard or read of a gun related crime in my city.
This is the same city that had Fred West living in it. Really. Not a nice city.
The thing is. What are guns invented for??? What is a guns use??
There is just ONE use. To KILL. Thats the sole use and purpose of guns. To kill.
SO I really dont understand how people can defend them.
Is it some machoism I dont get? That im misunderstanding?
Do people feel like violence is neccessary in life?
Anyhow. Thats my view on it.

I personally don't really care much for guns. Even though I want a gun for protection, mostly from other people with guns. But banning guns would never go over here the US. It would start a retard revolution. :help:

Thats what I dont get
The "I want a gun for protection". Why??? Is life sooooo bad in America people only feel safe if they have a gun??
Doesnt locking your door do?
Are Police THAT bad?
When I go to bed at night I dont fear somebody breaking in with a gun.
I dont go to work fearing I will have a gun pulled up on me.
I really dont get it. I dont understand the mentality to it.

Locking your doors is fine, but can only do so much. The police can only get to certain places but so fast. I also don't worry about someone breaking in with a gun and etc. But stuff does happens. When I say I want a gun for protection, I'm not talking about walking around with it 24/7 (that's just creepy). Really though, the mentality here is that guns give you "power". Yeah, it's a dumb mentality.

I don't own a gun, and I'm not sure that I ever will, but I can definitely see the appeal. My house was broken into while I was at work a few years ago, and a lot of our things were stolen, our filing cabinet that holds all our bank information was broken into, wires cut from the TV, etc. Because the door was kicked in, the door frame was destroyed and there were several days where we had to have a "stopper" on the door knob, that was braced against the floor. Unfortunately it was still easy to push in. I didn't sleep much until our lock was replaced and we got our alarm system.

In our country (US), it has really became a case of, when you have something to protect, you need a gun to protect yourself and your family from others who might try to break into your house or have guns as well. That is why gun advocates want less strict gun control, because criminals will have guns no matter how restrictive you make them. It's a vicious cycle brought about by a misinterpretation of the second amendment. On the other hand, you still run into cases where there are school and office shootings in Canada and France, so it's not just a problem with the US.

Would disagree there. In the UK it really isnt a case of criminals will have them regardless. Its much much much rarer that a criminal will hold a gun. Much more likely a knife. It would be very rare to know of a gun crime.

Yep, and fair point. There is on a rare occasion a shooting spree here in the UK too. Just a couple of years back, one Derrick Bird decided he would drive around slaying innocent people with his shotgun before blowing his brains out.
It of course is something that happens only once every decade or so.
But gun control will never stop gun crimes like this full stop. But what it does is reduces them. Which in turn saves lives.
IMO, and this is my opinion, guns should not be in the hands of joe public. They are killing instruments. Asks for trouble.

In the UK, sure. But here it's ingrained into the culture. People admire guns and the power they command. You can't just up and ban guns because there would be a ton of illegal weapons out there. At which point all the criminals would be armed and everyone else would not unless they broke the law. Should they not exist? Yes. But they do and it's a problem that's not all that simple to solve.

So the US and guns is really just about being too late? Guns are out there, you never abandoned them like we did way back and and now you really can't get rid of them anymore? It's crazy though, because we don't have lots of them on the streets the need to protect yourself with a gun is also a lot smaller, less criminals with guns, less crimes with guns and round and round it goes. But sure there are some guns out there and criminals will use them.

Sadly another tragedy has happened in th USA.

Time surely has to be to discuss gun laws. Its sooooooo fucking sad and disturbing reading about these massacre's in schools.

Guns have no place in society in my view. Evil things.

Unfortunately the idea of gun control is a band aid for our country. There is something inherently wrong with the way the US has developed that needs to be fixed or people will continue to find ways to do these things, regardless of whether guns are on the streets or not. Bombs can be made out of household chemicals, and can do far more damage than some idiot with a few guns. As long as our society sensationalizes these killers, we will continue to have these kinds of tragedies, whether guns exist or not.

That said, we would definitely see a lot fewer of these incidents if guns weren't so easily available. I love my country but I fear for the future.

Yes, guns are not the root cause of these incidents. People are quick to jump on the topic of gun control but there's a lot more behind it. There's certainly more to it, as seen here.

@Darkly It's not that it's too late it's just that you can't just take them away. I think it has to be done more delicately and slowly than just banning guns. Especially with the level of paranoid people who would think the government's just trying to take away their freedom.

Surely a tighter gun control is a start?
Surely when anybody can buy an assault rifle with an unlimited amount of amoo, that cant be right can it??

What I dont get is the defense. "its in the 2nd emendment" And???????? Back then in the UK we beheaded people for not being able to bear children. TIMES CHANGE.Laws evolve no?????

But my job now is working with people with mental health issues. Is mental health care not free in the usa?

No argument here. Assault rifles are ridiculous.

I think the argument about it being the second amendment is that it's ingrained into our rights from the beginning and if they can change that then they can change any of the amendments. People (especially paranoid people) will look at it like their rights are being taken away.

I wish it was free, but like all healthcare here you have to pay. It's kind of a convoluted system and I'm not sure what to think of the new healthcare plan that will be starting in 2014. We'll see I guess.

I mean forgive me. Im not american. I dont share the culture.
But why does an emendment that is hundreds of years old mean so much??
Surely moving with the times is not just a good thing, but a natural thing as technology improves no?
You say that it may change your rights, but there is the old human rights deal out there aint there? And isnt that what democracy is for??? You vote for the guy that you want?
So why does ancient texts mean so much? Its almost like here in the UK us relying on and depending on a set of rules the Royals wrote 500 years ago. It seems archaic.
I can understand guns to an an extent in the us.
I mean its massive. If you lived in the middle of nowhere, then you would want some way to defend yourself and your family. But the rules seem so lax.
And the NRA's response?? Was just laughable in my opinion.
So apparantly you guys need armed security guards at every school in america????
OMG, if that came to fruition, im sorry, but that would be a plain embarassment on your country.
