Jobs?

What does everyone here do for a living? I'm currently a computer programmer/report writer for a college. I was just watching a show on TV last night about drug dealers. I find it sickening that I went to college, work hard everyday, and dealers can make more money in a day than i make in a month. :-\

The same can be said about teh people on reality TV shows. All you have to do is have no shame and you can get further in this country than any amount of honesty and hard work will ever get you.

I'm currently unemployed, but I'm waiting to hear back from AutoZone for a part time spot. :sayprayers:

I do a bunch of stuff there's no one way to describe it because I don't have a title but a part of it involves driving a forklift so I tend to just tell people I race forklifts.

Drug dealers are one thing, bankers are on a whole other level. People want drugs to feed their addictions; dealers will supply them. So long as drugs are both illegal and in high demand, drug lords will thrive. The underworld is brutal, but generally speaking if you're in deep trouble with the mob, it's probably because you willingly participated knowing full well of the dangers. Bankers on the other hand legally plunder average citizens and send entire world economies into depression, will foreclose your ass but end up donating the house because nobody would buy them, leaving families homeless, credit records ruined, and in the end lose money anyway for both sides...and still go out for thousand dollar repast on a five hour corporate jet flight that costs several times my college tuition. Hey, jet pilots need to eat, too. But I will concede that bankers, at least, won't chop your head off at the Mexican border.

The preceding was a gross exaggeration but nonetheless encapsulizes what I think of the big cheeses of drug dealing and banking.

Back on topic; I'm working as a part time assistant at an insurance agency. Taking a break from school as I feel as I'm not getting what I need from the university.

I'm also unemployed at the moment. Before that I worked with a bunch of different and somewhat unusual stuff that involved a use of knife for a while and then some reading of newspapers and as a source admin of webpages, I also listened to news broadcasts on the internet. Media coverage but not for a newspaper but for companys wanting to keep an eye on the media coverage of them in the paper, the internet, radio, tv, social medias and so on. Basically information gathering/searching. But that's in the past now.

Unemployed here too, normally I work in sales or retail but at the moment I'm looking for pretty much anything, I need to save quite a lot of cash to go back to school.

I've been pondering lately if there's any possible way a person can be happy with their job? Is it even a possibility? And then I have also been wondering to myself if it's selfish of me to ask for happiness, when so many people don't have jobs period?

I really don't think I'll be able to be happy with my job unless I can work from home. I want to make an independent game studio, where I'm my own boss and work on my own schedule.

You know I've been pondering about that too alot lately now that I'm unemployed and all. I had some really good couple of years when I worked night. And it wasn't because the work in it self was challenging or fun, it was pretty repetitive and simple. But I was very fortunate to get to work with some really nice people and working with them felt more like hanging out with some friends and not just people you work with. Working night also meant very little interference from boss. So the key to my happines was the people that I worked with and the freedom that came with working night. Nobody caring about how many and how long breaks you take, no boss looking over your shoulder and all that other day time stress that comes from working in an office.
Unfortunatly it had to end. Because in the end my boss decides what hours I should work and with whom and there is very little I can do about that.
I was pretty happy back then but I think it is very unlikely that I'll be that lucky again and that really makes me depressed.

Darn now I'm sounding way to negative again, right I suppose this is what I should do: become boss--> get awesome friends to work with--> make sure money and other bosses won't come ruin everything.

I just realized something, I forgot what I was going for when I started on this post. But you sound a bit sad and something in your post just made me really want to write something.

I'll prolly just edit this later when I can think of something better to say : :theyreontome:

Haha yeah, I've been kind of down lately. It seems like I spend all my time not making enough money, and not working towards anything that makes me happy. I like your plan about becoming the boss, though. That sounds like a plan. But not an underboss for some bigger boss. That just seems like way too much pressure.

Okay to be honest I really haven't experienced this myself, being a student bum, but I'm just gonna go ahead and post my observations and what I've heard from people who have experienced the same. Or you can say I'm full of hot air. It'd be true either way.

Being your own boss is really one of the toughest things to do-- even harder than working for someone else. The job doesn't stop at a certain time, it becomes part of your life. While you gain complete control and don't have someone ordering you around, it requires real commitment and accountability. If your business is doing badly or is being mismanaged, you can't blame its failures on anybody else but yourself. But if anyone is willing to work at being their own boss, I think the personal fulfillment is a reward in itself. After all, you would want to be a boss because you personally feel like you can do better than someone else.

I think it is possible to find happiness in your job, even if it isn't exactly the sort of work you would really want to do. I think if you want to be happy at your job, rather than wishing that your job would bring you satisfaction, you would need to find enjoyment and satisfaction that your work. For example in Darkly's case, the job itself was very boring but being around people you like made the time spent at work enjoyable. It isn't necessarily the work itself that brings you happiness. You can be at a job that many people would consider their dream job, but still hate it because you can't use your strengths, the environment is hostile, or you are around people who are not compatible with you. Meanwhile there are many people who find satisfaction working less glamorous jobs (ones you wouldn't exactly consider dream jobs) like working at a fast food restaurant. Preparing hamburgers may not sound all that fun to you, but some people truly enjoy making good food to feed to people.

My goal with having my own business(as I'm sure everyone's is when they start one) is to really just set my own hours. Every job I've ever had has had so much downtime when I'm not busy that I don't even have any idea what to do, so I always just stress about it and get nervous about the idea of someone looking over my shoulder because I'm not doing anything.. If I owned my own business I'd just be done at that time.

I think you're right about finding happiness in your job. In what I do, it's just pretty hard to do. I do find enjoyment in helping thankful students. During this time of year it's always really stressful because of impatient/angry helicopter parents who are always very rude. And then I have to make reports for people and go to meetings with higher-ups a lot, so there's always quite a bit of stress in my job.

Honestly when I used to work as a morning stocker, I had a situation similar to what Darkly had. I was pretty much my own boss, and could work as hard as I wanted, talk with people, etc. The boss was almost never there because I got there at 5AM and was done at 9AM. Of course this wouldn't pay all the bills now, though. Those were good times... kind of. Nostalgia tricks you into many things. Actually, it reminds me of the movie Cashback, about an artist that breaks up with his girlfriend, gets insomnia, and discovers he can stop time with his mind. He then gets an overnight job at a grocery store. I caught it on Netflix, and recommend seeing it if you ever get the chance. There's lots of naked girls in it, too. :theyreontome:
