Commercialization and P.C. in the holiday season

Post by Agent Of Fortune »

Seeing as how the season's coming up, I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on political correctness's effects on the holiday season. Obviously most religions have some big celebration around this time of year, but it seems like the only "god" anybody is allowed to pray to anymore is commercialism. I was watching this irritating GAP ad the other day (though all gap ads piss me off to no end) that called a Christmas tree a "Classic tree". Its a fucking Christmas tree! Everyone, whether they are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or athiest knows its a Christmas tree. You don't look at the Minora and say "Oh hey that's a neat candleholder" or a Yamucah(sp?) and say "that's a cute little beanie on your head."

I don't really know how I feel about God anymore (I grew up Catholic) but I really do hate how the media pretty much makes it seem like anybody that's a Christian is automatically a weirdo thats behind the times. It doesn't really seem like any of the other religions get this treatment. It doesn't make any sense to me... You don't ever see Athiests attacking Jewish people or Buddhists; just Christians. (Maybe they do, I don't know. I'm just going by what I see)

Anyway, I don't know if there was a coherent thought in that whole mess. I guess I was just ranting. I understand that we shouldn't just have "Christmas parties" or show Christmas specials on TV, as the nation is a very diverse place, and I think that's great. I hate monopoly on any front. To be honest, I would love to watch a special on Hannukah, as I know very little about it. I just don't understand why it seems like if a person dares to say they are a Christian they are automatically not "cool."

Imagine if Muslims were asked to change references to Ramadan to 'entrance to fall celebration'. You haven't seen a holy war yet... It's because Christians aren't violent and war-like with their values that the liberal progressives think they can trample on those values to promote their elitist agenda. There are many quotes in the New Testimate of Jesus saying that they would degrade those who are followers of him. Their judgment day is coming whether they like it or not.

What is my view on PC?

I don't give a shit about P.C.
Someone gets offended if someone says Christmas or whatever else..fuck you, your problem. Just enjoy the time with family religious(any religion) or not.
Hell my brother isn't religious or has any view really but his wife is athiest and they still celebrate the holiday as a family gathering.
I don't care about the religious background to it,to me it's a time for family. Call it whatever you want.

Almost every atheist/agnostic person I have met felt the same way.

I've never heard anyone say a "classic tree" or whatever. Most of this shit is overblown fear-mongering nonsense (see: winterval).

That said, why the fuck should it be changed? Even if it was offensive to a religion, who gives a shit. You're offended, grow the fuck up, they're just words, ignore them. Don't expect everyone in the world to agree with you.

I think a lot of it is propaganda, like this climate change thing. It can be pretty insidious and there's a lot of people who don't have the time to research the facts themselves who get sucked into it on one side or the other.

Re: what Jameson said about only Christians being targeted, I thought this was interesting. This new disaster film 2012, if you've seen the trailer you've seen the Vatican falling over and killing catholic worshippers, and the statue of Christ in Brazil toppling.

Says openly gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) director Roland Emmerich, "I'm against organised religion in general. Why go into a church and pray? I have no idea. That's why I said, 'If you are going to turn to God in a moment of peril, don't do it in a church because this thing could fall on your head.'"

He then goes on to add, "We couldn't destroy Mecca. That's the problem with our world. I wanted to but if I destroyed Mecca in a movie, I would have a fatwa on my head."

As a representative of the media industry I can say without a doubt that all of this is intentional. They all think they are so intellectual and so blatantly arrogant about it. They live in their own reality and when people take offense they really are shocked about it because they were in their group mind think bubble the whole time. Most media HQ's are in New York City or Los Angles filled with arrogant liberals who think they are better than everyone else. They are pretty miserable people if you meet them.

Christmas was originally a Christian adaptation of the pagan Yule celebration. How do you think the pagans feel about this?! The indignity!!

Assholes are assholes. Labeling yourself a member of an organized religion won't save you from being stupid and/or a jerkwad.
As for the commercialism of the holidays, it's a sad thought that there are people who do buy into everything the media feeds them. As if surrounding yourself with toys will give you fulfillment. It's terrible that some people lead such empty, superficial lives but I do not pity nor sympathize with them.

My stance? I just can't be bothered to argue with them. I just let them be. I'm perfectly content tending to my own life with the people I know and care for.

On PC: I think it's ridiculous. It's well enough to acknowledge the different celebrations that occur during the holidays, but I don't find it necessary to butcher one so as to not step on anyone's toes. Just celebrate how you want to celebrate, or not at all if that's your choice. It is so unnecessary to be so terrified of being politically correct that you can't even enjoy yourself.

I think you also have to bare in mind the Vatican and big jebus are much more recognisable than Mecca. Can't really think of many well known religious monuments or buildings that aren't Christian.

Christianity is a victim of its own 'success'.

As for 2012 being brought up,who cares it's one of the worst films made in years(yes I saw it) it's just a retarded shitty film that is one single hair better than a micheal bay film just because I didn't have to read it was directed by him..but might as well been.
No one will even remember it,don't waste energy caring about anything in it.

^Its funny, I thought it was a Michael Bay film. It has his terrible-movie stink all over it.

Some great points here. I agree with everything that you said.

 I don't know why, but I find this hilarious. "I'm going to use my horrible movie as a soapbox to preach my views." What a douchenozzle.

Hah, granted it's still hard to deal with some people. On one hand I'd love to debate their views, but they probably think I'm ridiculous already

I find the ubiquitous "world is going to end" formula so tiring.
